June 23 - June 28: Central & North Bali
Next we will travel to Ubud, the cultural and artistic hub of the island. Gettysburg alumnus, Wayan Rachman has made arrangements for us to stay at some villas in his village. We will learn to play gamelan on gong kebyar instruments (ten-barred instruments that are significantly larger and more dramatic and versatile than the four-barred instruments we play at the college). We will also learn how to dance and to perform kecak.
We will attend performances and ceremonies in Ubud and the surrounding region and work with Sawa Bali, an organization that is helping rice farmers keep their lands from being purchased and developed by Western industries. We will hear stories from farmers and explore globalization and the environmental impacts occurring in their community. While in Central Bali, we will take excursions to cultural sites throughout the week located in the North of Bali like Pura Ulun Danu Bratan, hiking to see waterfalls and beautiful vistas in Munduk, and a visit to the Jatiluwih world heritage site. |
June 29 - July 8: West Bali
We will travel to Banjar Wani in Kerambitan, near Tabanan on the Western part of the island. Here we will stay in home stays with I Nyoman Suadin and his family and various friends. This is the village where Dr. Talbot lived during his sabbatical in 2014. It is a lovely community with very friendly people. We will do ethnographic field projects with the youth of Banjar Wani--getting to know more intimately what life is like for people living in this region. We will work in the local schools. We will continue to learn gamelan gong kebyar and perform with the village gamelan, learning older styles of music. We will learn Jegog (a style of gamelan so large you have to sit on top of bamboo the size of your bed). We will also take excursions to visit gamelan makers in the region. We will visit the beautiful black sand beaches as well as take excursions to Tanah Lot, one of the most important and oldest temples on the island. This temple sits in the middle of the ocean and is featured in the photograph at the top of this page.
