ENS197: Gamelan Gita Semara
PARTICIPATION, PROFESSIONALISM, & ATTENDANCE
It is imperative that you participate fully in all aspects of this course, as outlined in this syllabus. If there are circumstances that may prevent you from full participation, you should speak with the instructor at the outset of the course. Consider this your job. How would you conduct yourself with your employer? Not showing up, not participating fully, and not communicating, is grounds for dismissal.
Being a member of Gamelan Gita Semara means you are a representative of the college community, so professional conduct is expected at all times. Professional conduct means NO tardiness or unexcused absences. It also means active and respectful communication with the professor, classmates, and professional partners.
Absences due to serious illness and family emergencies will be approved on an individual basis in consultation with the professor. Absence or lateness due to illness will not be excused unless the illness is severe. You must notify the instructor ([email protected]) in writing at least two weeks before any event that may require you to miss a rehearsal or performance. This includes any college-sponsored absences. Please understand that the professor has the right not to approve absences from regularly scheduled classes. Do not make travel arrangements involving absences from ensemble rehearsals.
You must notify the instructor in writing PRIOR to the rehearsal or performance if you are to be excused for illness. The absence will not be excused if prior notification is not made. If you are physically unable to perform, you can still actively participate in rehearsals and are expected to attend class.
Cell phones must be turned off and put away during rehearsal unless used to make recordings. Email, social networking, and surfing the internet during class is prohibited. Use the restroom before rehearsal begins and during designated breaks.
ASSIGNMENTS, LISTENING, & READING
All assignments are due at the beginning of the class on the specified date. Due to the collaborative nature of the course, late work will not be accepted. Your responsibility is to build upon that introductory material, to listen to the recordings outside of class, and to immerse yourself in readings and recordings, which will further prepare you for more in-depth activities the following rehearsal. Expect to be called upon to demonstrate your preparation for learning at all times.
GRADING
Your grade will be comprised of the following elements: Musical Preparation = 80%, Performance = 20%. All preparation checks should be redone if full credit is not given on the first attempt. This “editing” process will help you refine your musical skills.
Perfect attendance at all rehearsals and performances is expected. Each unexcused absence will result in the drop of a student’s grade by one full letter (e.g., A to B). Students with three or more unexcused absences will receive a grade of F. Tardiness to two rehearsals equals one unexcused absence; tardiness to a dress rehearsal or performance equals one unexcused absence. An ensemble member is considered tardy if they are not ready for rehearsal (i.e., in place, with music and pencil) at the scheduled starting time. Absence from a dress rehearsal or performance may result in a grade of F and possible expulsion from the ensemble. Students that are absent three or more times for any reason (excused or unexcused) may need to be cleared to perform by individually performing their music for the director. Students that are absent a total of 20% or more from regularly scheduled class meetings for any reason (excused or unexcused) will receive a grade of F.
